Selank, also referred to as TP-7, is a synthetic peptide that has gained considerable interest within the scientific community due to its potential anxiolytic, neuroprotective, and cognitive-enhancing effects. Derived from the naturally occurring human tetrapeptide Tuftsin, this heptapeptide is believed to possess a wide range of biological functions, including improving memory, reducing anxiety, and potentially offering protection against neurodegenerative conditions.

Selank operates primarily by influencing the GABAergic system, which is responsible for the body’s primary inhibitory neurotransmission. By modulating the activity of GABA receptors, Selank is able to produce a calming effect on the brain, helping to alleviate anxiety while also boosting cognitive performance. Research conducted by Semenova et al. (2014) demonstrated that Selank could improve learning and memory in rats, highlighting its potential for cognitive enhancement and as a treatment for cognitive impairments.

Beyond its anxiolytic and nootropic benefits, Selank has also exhibited neuroprotective effects. A study by Ershov et al. (2016) showed that Selank could safeguard neurons from oxidative damage, suggesting its possible use in treating neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Because of its diverse effects, Selank has been suggested as a promising therapeutic option for conditions ranging from anxiety and cognitive disorders to neurodegenerative diseases. For example, Medvedev et al. (2017) found that Selank was effective in alleviating symptoms in individuals suffering from generalized anxiety disorder, underscoring its potential as a treatment for anxiety.

While the research on Selank offers encouraging results, it should be noted that much of the evidence comes from animal or in vitro studies. Further investigations are required to determine the full scope of its effects in humans. However, the current body of research suggests that Selank holds promise as a treatment option for anxiety, cognitive decline, and neurodegenerative diseases.
